  • 5th LCWC, Brisbane, Australia (2014/2015)

Leap of faith by thirteen souls! An unlucky number became lucky for Bangladesh Lawyers’ Cricket Club (BLCC) as it led to the formation of this club. The journey which began as an ambitious dream of Barrister Muddasir Hossain soon became a reality due to collective group effort, hardwork and vision of several lawyers. Being a cricket enthusiast himself involved with playing cricket, Barrister Muddasir along with Dr. Khaled Hamid Chowdhury, Barrister Aneek R Haque, Barrister Muntasir Ahmed and Barrister Mutahar Hossain was involved in identifying potential members for the proposed Australia Tour. First hurdle for BLCC was to get players who not only can play cricket but was generous and willing to make the trip down under knowing fully well the monumental task that lay ahead. Many lawyers were approached but were unable to make the trip due to personal, family or other limitations. Notwithstanding the above, the effort of Barrister Muddasir Hossain and his colleagues didn’t go in vain. Eventually, a squad of 14 members were formed to represent BLCC in the 5th Edition of the Lawyers’ Cricket World Cup (LCWC) held in Brisbane, Australia 2014. BLCC proudly participated in the lawyers cricket World Cup under the leadership of Muddasir Hossain with no physio or coach or support staffs unlike other teams. To make things worse, Dr. Khaled Hamid Chowdhury missed the tour at the last minute and Barrister Naquib Karim, the lone wicketkeeper, dislocated his finger during the practice session in Brisbane just before the start of the tournament. In this time of crisis, Barrister Aneek R. Haque took charge as the stand in keeper allowing Naquib continue only as a batsman with help of pain killer and bandages! Barrister Shafayat Ullah joined as the opening batsman of the team. Barrister Junayed Chowdhury was known for his leggie and a hard hitting batting. Barrister Mutahar Hossain was the hard hitter and terrific fielder who covered for 2-3 people in big fields. Barrister Muntasir was also a reliable all rounder and the rock in the middle both as a batsman and bowler. The team also comprised of group of fantastic all rounders Barrister Zubi Moosa, Barrister Faisal Dastagir, Barrister Emdad and Barrister Naquib, the wicket keeping allrounder. Barrister Muddasir Hossain was the most reliable and economic bowler of BLCC who could bowl at any stage of the innings. Another reliable fielder and bowling option was Advocate Showkat Hossain. Barrister Syed Ridwan Hossain was the specialist bowler who bowled in the middle whereas Barrister Mahdin Chowdhury opened the bowling with Faisal Dastagir. All 13 members of the squad were players, water boys, first aiders during the matches. The team played 5 matches of 35 overs within a span of 8 days with almost no rest. This tour was planned, organised and arranged in less than 60 days. There was no doubt amongst the 13 members that it lacked the practice and planning for such an ominous tour. However, the team took a leap of faith and fought with sheer grits, mental strength and dedication. The team always knew that this would be the beginning of something new and wonderful. The rest is history! This post is to remember the persons and masterminds behind the formation of the club. BLCC shall forever be grateful for their contributions.
